A different use for Nock Co.’s Burton

Hands up, please, if you miss Nock Co.

Ah ok, thanks.

You can lower your hands again, thanks for taking part.

I’m not surprised so many here miss Nock Co. It’s a real shame they closed down. Their products were well thought-out and of great quality. Luckily, I backed all Nock Co. x Pen Addict Kickstarters, so can still enjoy a few of their pencil cases.

The 2015 Hightower is just a great pencil case.

The 2017 Sapelo fits perfectly in my Lihit Lab A4 sleeve that I use to transport my laptop to work every day – and the quality of the Sapelo so much better than that of the Lihit Lab case.

The 2018 Tallulah is my dedicated Rotring case.

There’s one case however I never really could find a great use for: the 2019 Burton. The waxed surface made me (probably needlessly) worried that it will make items sticky or greasy if the outside comes into contact with them. The inside was somehow too big for my purposes. The look is great though. Outside it is unobtrusive, inside it is happily and very bright green – it’s the bomber jacket among pencil cases.

My new use is not really stationery-related. It’s now my case for an 8 inch portable screen I use for Raspberry Pis. It’s not quite the intended “A5 notebook and some pens” use, but it works very well for me.

  1. You’re absolutely right – Nock Co made some very well thought out items – I only got one – but wished I got more.

I hope you all have a great Christmas – best from the North West of England!

  2. I love NockCo. I have the same feeling you do about waxed canvas– that Burton is the only Nock item I have that isn’t in use! The size is great though.

  3. I’m a total NockCo fan, and have several of their awesome pen, and pen+card cases. I loved giving them as gifts to students & writers … but I’m less generous with my stash now that they cannot be replaced. And I like finding cases that work for my needs — even if that’s not about pens. Your Burton as tech case seems a good use!

I actually LOVE the Burton and it’s seen lots of use.. First, I’ve had no problem with the “waxed” fabric transfers, at all. Nor does anything stick to the case when knocking around in various bags. I frequently have in my Burton several pens, miscellaneous water brushes, a correction pen, a sticky note pad, & a couple of NockCo 4-sided index cards. When I inlude my A5 Hobonichi planner or A5 notebook or pad, I have slightly less room for extras, but it’s amazing how much the Burton can actually hold. Recently discovered that the 8-color Uni-1 pens in their own case, and it’s surprising how often it just slips inside the Burton as well.

Thanks for the reminder of the important niche NockCo occupied in the fountain pen/stationery communities, and for letting me celebrate my NockCo Burton case!!

  4. Thank you all for your kind comments and for sharing your thoughts and experiences.
Amro, also wishing you a great Christmas.
LJD, I hope you will also find a good use for the Burton.
Luz, the uni one pens are great. I forgot about the index cards, I will look them up.
